Excerpt from Africa’s New Coat
Africaaaaaaaa! “Africaaaaaaaa!” Called Africa’s mother from the bottom of the staircase. A fully clothed Africa sat on the edge of her bed, grinning ear to ear with both hands clasped over her mouth to muffle her shrieks and giggles. “Africaaaa! It’s already 8 o’clock, and I can’t believe you would not be up and dressed by now. Have you forgotten what a special day it is?” Africa could hear her mother beginning to walk upstairs muttering. “I cannot believe this. When I was a little girl, I was ready for school before it was time to go to bed.” Africa's heart raced with excitement as she wriggled with glee as she waited for her mother to enter her bedroom. Africa was all too aware of what a special day it was today. She had spent months asking her mother when she would have the wonderful coat that she had seen her mother wear in photographs when her mother was a child. She knew where it was but had never seen it up close. Her mother and father kept the coat locked in a trunk in their bedroom. Last year she thought she had caught a glimpse of it as her mother put it back into the heavy wooden trunk that sat under the bedroom window. “What are you doing, mother?” she said from the bedroom doorway. “Is that the coat you are wearing in the picture of you and grandmother in the garden when you were small like me? Africa’s mother had smiled without looking up. Yes, my love, it is, she said. Her eyes were glazed with amazement and full of sparkle. Can I see it? Can I wear it? Wait! Can I have it?
About the Author
Clifford Faulder’s life has been as eventful as it has been fun. Born in Birmingham, England, to his parents Tom and El Freda, Cliff grew up listening to wonderful stories about his parents’ childhood in Jamaica and was inspired to create stories off the top of his head to entertain his friends in school. Throughout his school years at Fairfax in Sutton Coldfield, Cliff was happiest when he talked with people. Cliff was often the only person of colour in his environment. He learned to build genuine human connections with various people regardless of where they were from, thus challenging stereotypes and prejudice wherever he went. After leaving school, Cliff used his love of talking to people to embark upon various careers, from salesman to rap artist. Later, becoming a senior director for many of Birmingham’s top therapeutic childcare services. Working closely with children who faced many emotional and physical challenges, Cliff once again found his ability to create stories helpful to the children in his care and the adults who supported them. Although Cliff no longer works directly within therapeutic children’s services, he still helps countless children and adults develop greater human connections through his anti-racism training organization AboutFace. At AboutFace, Cliff continues to share stories such as Africa’s New Coat to do what he does best - Bring people together.
